Case Study 7: Charlotte Intermodal Facility
Use of BX geogrids to reduce the thickness of a roller compacted concrete (RCC) pavement.
The pavements adjacent to the railway lines at this intermodal facility are required to carry the extremely heavy axle loads imposed by various container lifting equipment. Placement of a geogrid at the bottom of the unbound aggregate layer enabled the RCC thickness to be reduced by 3 inches. The geogrid also helped to mitigate the effects of a silty subgrade prone to significant rutting following periods of heavy rainfall.
